José Avelino Canongia (1784-1842), Portuguese clarinettist of Catalan origins, stood, alongside with pianist and composer João Domingos Bomtempo, as one of the most acclaimed Portuguese virtuosos of the early half in the nineteenth century.
From Paris to S. Petersburg, from London to the Italian peninsula, he played frequently in the foremost plateaus, always to great appreciation of the public. Later he became principal clarinet of the opera orchestra at the S. Charles Royal Theatre, and was to be also the first teacher at the newly founded National Conservatory of Music, from 1835.
