“7 Obsessões”

For Saxophone Quartet and Diatonic Accordion

This work holds seven small movements (or dances), corresponding to each one of the musical modes. In each one of them a certain musical obsession is explored. Of several explored aspects, it stands out the clear and simple musical language, the unisons between the Concertina and the Saxophone, the finals without rest…

The chosen sequence for the seven movements contributes to the modal atmosphere of the whole work, when moving the Phrygian for after the Aeolian.

It is a work of research naive and free and, for that reason, open to futures developments.

  1. 1. Jon (Ionian mode)

The obsession here explored is the eternal return to the initial theme (a rhythmic ritual), growing from the order to the chaos, always in a diverse way. Harmonically, chords of juxtaposed 5ths perfect are explored.

  1. 2. Doric (Dorian mode)

The obsession is the repetition of the harmonic cycle of 16 measures. This cycle is based on the cycle of 5ths of the tonal system (but centred in the Dorian mode) with the repetition of pairs of chords and the absence of the dominant (enhancing the modal atmosphere).

  1. 3. Lid (Lydian mode)

Here grows a canon, which is one of the oldest musical obsessions. The curious is that the theme doesn’t have regular pulsation and all the notes are executed as if they always went the strong time. This provokes different pulsations for each instrument whenever the theme opens up in canons.

  1. 4. Mixol (Mixolydian mode)

In this case the obsession is the eternal harmonic alternation between the Mixolydian mode and the Hispano-Arab scale.

  1. 5. Eol (Aeolian mode)

The obsession is the eternal return to the general unison after developing successively to different finals.

  1. 6. Frig (Phrygian mode)

The obsession here developed is a harmonic cycle of six chords; with only the last chord changing.

  1. 7. Locr (Locrian mode)

The obsession is the rhythmic pattern that, seeming complex, is the result of the junction of several very simple rhythmic obsessions. In this case, the essence that these instruments have in common is explored: the air.
